PNG, JPG or WebP: which one should you use?
The file format affects image quality, file size and transparency. Choose it according to the image content and where the file will be used.
How the three formats differ
PNG is lossless, so it introduces no additional lossy compression artefacts and supports transparency. Its files are often large for photographs.
JPG reduces file size by discarding some information. It is well suited to photographs and widely compatible, but it does not support transparency and can create artefacts around text and sharp edges.
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. It often reduces file size compared with JPG or PNG at similar visual quality, but check whether the destination accepts it.
- PNG — Lossless · transparency · well suited to screenshots and graphics
- JPG — Lossy · no transparency · well suited to photos and broad compatibility
- WebP — Lossy or lossless · transparency · useful for reducing file size
Choose by use
Screenshots and diagrams contain text, thin lines and flat colours, which PNG handles well. JPG can blur text or add artefacts around it.
JPG and WebP are usually good choices for portraits and landscapes. Start with JPG for compatibility or compare WebP when file size matters.
- Screenshots, diagrams and text-heavy images — PNG
- Portrait and landscape photos — JPG or WebP
- Logos, icons and transparent backgrounds — PNG or WebP

Adjust the quality value
MOKIRI lets you adjust quality when exporting JPG and WebP. A higher value usually stays closer to the source but produces a larger file, and the result varies by image and browser.
For photographs, start around 80 and inspect the result. Raise the value if you see banding or artefacts in smooth colour transitions. Lower it only while text and edges remain clear enough.
PNG has no quality control in MOKIRI. If a PNG is too large, reduce its pixel dimensions or consider JPG or WebP.
Be careful with repeated saves
Opening a lossy JPG or WebP and exporting it with lossy compression again can accumulate compression artefacts. When possible, edit from the original and export once at the end.
Exporting several times from the same editing state in MOKIRI does not recompress a previous export. You can change the quality value and compare several results.
When you open a GIF, its animation is not preserved and only the first frame remains. MOKIRI cannot export GIF files.
