How to hide personal information in photos
A marketplace photo or screenshot can contain several clues that identify a person. Match the covering method to the type of information, then inspect the exported file before sharing it.
What should you hide?
Check combinations of clues, not just a face or name in isolation. A partial address shown beside a licence plate, for example, can make a person or location easier to identify.
A screenshot may include a URL, notification text, a document name in a tab, or an account name in the taskbar. Inspect the edges of the screen as well as the main content.
- Direct identifiers — Faces, names, signatures, passport and ID numbers
- Contact and location — Phone numbers, email addresses, addresses, shipping labels and licence plates
- Financial and access details — Card and account numbers, QR codes, one-time codes, API keys and tokens
- Indirect clues — Views through windows, staff badges, reflected screens, calendars and seating plans
When to use blur or a solid shape
MOKIRI’s Mosaic tool blurs the selected area. Blur blends into the surrounding image, but an outline may remain, so it is not suitable for fully hiding text or numbers.
A filled shape covers that area in the exported result. The original file remains unchanged, so make sure you share the correct file.
- Blur — Use it on faces, bystanders or vehicles when you want to reduce identifiability.
- Solid shape — Use it to cover account, card and ID numbers, email addresses, codes and tokens.
A practical order in MOKIRI
Crop unwanted edges and settle the final dimensions before covering information. Zoom in at the end and check for anything you missed.
- Open the image and crop away unwanted edges.
- Apply a strong Mosaic blur to faces or background details.
- Cover text and numbers with a filled shape and leave a little margin.
- Zoom in and inspect every edge for exposed content.
- Export a new file, open it again, and inspect it before sharing.
Checks before sharing
MOKIRI does not modify the file you opened. The result and original may sit next to each other in the same folder, so check the file name and preview before sharing.
Photos can contain EXIF metadata such as the time, location and device used. MOKIRI does not copy the original EXIF data into the canvas-based export, but the metadata remains in the original file.
